OccupyTO is inviting the public to take part in a direct horizontal democratic process that will allow for engagement and awareness among Canadians. We are determined to recognize the grievances of Canadian Citizens with regards to our Economic and Financial Policies. It has become clear to us that there is a great deal of unethical and unjust behaviour among our corporate elite. We will propose demands that will ensure of the eradication of economic and social inequality, while putting an end to corporate greed and bad governance. So, we invite all to join us in occupying the Toronto Financial District and taking part in our General Assemblies.

We stand in Solidarity with Occupy Wall St. and Global Revolution movements around the world.

Broken Arts: Past and Present Pretenses

Broken Arts

Birth of a community

In the hot summer of July 2009, three confident young artists decided to dive head first into a revolution of their own — meant for the greater collective community. A project, an idea, a passion to unite Oshawa’s artists of all kinds, in a push to make whole what was once a divided community. In two years, through the contributions of many individuals, and the efforts of the Broken Arts team, they have managed to host a plethora of shows, twenty, to be precise, 4 crafts fairs, and even had the city of Oshawa involved and participating in it’s first ever “Buskerfest,” an event that brought out artists of all kinds, from musicians to painters and beyond. Not only affecting the city, it’s changed those involved as well; “Broken Arts has been life-changing. Every time anyone wants to pay money to attend one of our shows I’m totally humbled,” says Harley Pageot, one of Broken Arts original members through a changing line-up.  “We organized Oshawa’s first buskerfest, started Oshawa’s first zine distro, got buskers at the city’s Canada Day celebrations for the first time, and have brought out numerous fantastic bands that had never played Oshawa before.”

ID Please?

Their continued efforts have seen them through with their goal of a common unity between the arts in Oshawa, and now they turn to face the struggle with all-ages venues, an ever-present cloud that covers Oshawa. The high-cost of booking, and the general lack of interest for all-ages shows within the numerous bars and venues in Oshawa proves difficult, and Broken Arts remains steadfast in their belief that everyone has the right to see live music. From the outside, Broken Arts may look as though they support little other than the unplugged acts, but dig deeper and you’ll find a burning desire to plug in, and rock out. Supportive as places such as the Mad Cafe and The Garden Grove may be, they simply don’t have the equipment to play loud music, and the bars disinterest in truly helping out leaves the option on the hanger — for now.

The Future

Broken Arts is full-steam ahead, having just revealed and released their new zine, “Now or Never,” which can be purchased online (links at the bottom,) and having hosted “Soundtracked 19: Cult Days,” their first show at the “Mad Cafe” in Oshawa on Friday. A street-team meeting has been organized for Oct. 6th where anyone can participate, (again links at the bottom,) as well as a Christmas show in early December. With no hope in hell of slowing down, Broken Arts will continue to liven up the downtown core with arts and culture, and we should thank them for doing so. If you’re a musician, contact them! If you’re an artist of any kind, contact them! If you wanna help out… contact ‘em! We are all the community, and the community is all.
